Analysis of IT trailer

The film IT is a horror film which is due to be released in September 2017. The film is a remake with the original being released in 1990. The film is targeted towards both men and women from the ages of 15 as this is the age rating given which is conventional for a horror. Some couples may go and see this film because if they scared they will have someone with them.

The trailer begins with calming music (non-diegetic) which creates and atmosphere for the audience and shows 2 of the main characters who are brothers. The older brother is making a paper boat for the youngest Georgie. This scene is followed by Georgie taking the boat outside during a storm. Mise en scene is used during this scene as Georgie's raincoat is the same as the original so if the audience has seen that one they know that this one is going to follow the same story line. Also where the film is a horror this scene is set during a storm which makes it dark and is conventional to the genre. With the calming music (non-diegetic) still playing Georgie places the boat down onto a flow of water. A long shot is used to show the location of the scene which is out on the street and then followed by a shot which is from his P.o.v which leads to him crashing into a barrier and losing the boat.

By the time he gets close to the boat it falls down a drain which is when the calming music comes to an end which leaves the audience feeling tense and wonder what is going to happen next. After a few seconds of him looking for the boat the clown pops out from the drain. When this happens a sudden noise is heard (non-diegetic) which makes the audience jump and the start to feel scared.

A fade to black effect is used and then titles appear slowly " from Stephen King's terrifying novel" as well as quite music (non-diegetic) in the background to make the audience feel on edge. The next scene has a voice over of one of the characters talking about people suddenly going missing especially children. This makes the audience wonder if this happened to the boy at the start of the trailer and wonder if the clown has something to do with the disappearances. A close up is shown of a sign saying about being home by 7pm which then leads to a close up of a missing poster. The next scene has eerie music playing throughout (non-diegetic) which creates a tense atmosphere for the audience. This scene features one of the children in the library when suddenly a red balloon floats past and then it quickly cuts to a black screen.

During the black screen a little boy's voice is heard (diegetic sound) which sounds like Georgie which makes the audience curious on what happened to him and if he is alive or not. The next scene shows some of the characters talking about seeing the clown (diegetic sound) "yeah I saw IT". A long shot is shown of what looks like an abandoned house which is convention of a horror film. This makes the audience wonder if the clown lives here. It then cuts to the children trying to figure out how to get to the drains which is where they think the clown lives. Suddenly the music (non-diegetic) speeds up and becomes more intense as the pictures start changing by themselves. The last picture is a family picture with Georgie in and the mum starts to look more and more like the clown which scares the children and they try and turn it off.

The last few scenes have been edited at a fast pace and only last a few seconds which makes the audience feel tense. The last scene of the trailer shows Georgie and his older brother who thinks he's found him but he isn't really there. A close up is used to show the clown hiding in the water the suddenly runs towards the older brother. The title of the film 'IT' slowly fades onto the screen in red which looks like it's been written in blood. The date of release is also shown 'September 8' which is usually included in trailers. Social media is also included which lets the audience stay up to date with anything about the film.
